The State of Illinois has mandated that all counties across the state must reduce the number of PSAPs by 50 percent by the end of 2017. This has placed strains, both financial and political, on communities across the state as they struggle to comply. Will County, in North East Illinois, is setting the example for cooperation and progress by moving forward with a unique joint dispatch center. Under the plan the Will County Sheriff will pay to build a new communications center as part of an existing plan to build a new facility. What makes the plan unique is that the centers being consolidated will continue to operate the new facility, not the Sheriff. Communities in the county find the plan appealing because they will maintain local control over their operations, and will see a cost savings in the leasing a facility as opposed to maintaining a new building.
