Staffing Issues Highlighted Following TN Officer Death

Memphis Tennessee Police Officer Sean Bolton was shot and killed while performing a traffic stop just after 9:00 pm on August 1, 2015. A citizen who witnessed the shooting dialed 9-1-1 however due to a large number of incoming calls was not able to speak to a dispatcher. The citizen ended up using Officer Bolton’s radio to call for help. The incident highlights a serious staffing shortage in the Memphis call center, one that officials have been aware of for some time. Officials also blame callers who hang up when they reach an automated attendant on the line and all dispatchers are busy. An additional 30 dispatchers have been hired and are in the process of being trained to help alleviate the issue.
