Fayetteville, North Carolina officals are examining the possibility of creating a long term “step” plan for dispatchers. The city hired an outside consulting firm who recommended the plan in part to increase the longevity and moral of the dispatch center. Officials are seriously looking at implementing a 16 step plan for dispatchers with yearly step raises between 2 and 4 percent.
We are excited to see city officials supporting improving pay for dispatchers. As our profession grows and evolves it is refreshing to see the support from elected officials. Increasing pay over time develops an incentive for a strong employee to stay with an organization longer, lowering turnover, training costs, and overtime. Longevity has a cascading effect across all aspects of a PSAP.
