On Sunday, April 19, 2015 just before 7:00 am a 13 year old boy was woken up by his dog barking. When he woke the boy found his house on fire and the hallway already too hot for him and his sister to evacuate through. The boy dialed 9-1-1 and stayed on the line with a Prince George’s County 9-1-1 dispatcher for 11 minutes until firefighters were able to rescue him and his 9 year old sister.
This call was an example of excellent work by the dispatcher. She maintained her composure, comforted the caller, provided life saving instructions, and helped direct resources to the caller.
The caller also deserves a standing ovation. His courage and knowledge to call 9-1-1 saved not only his life, but his sisters as well if not his entire family. It takes a truly brave 13 year old to maintain the cool headed composure he did throughout the call.
We have the 9-1-1 call as well as fire ground radio tapes we are processing and will post soon.
