A Columbus County, North Carolina dispatcher has been suspended after she told a 9-1-1 caller to not stop in a dangerous neighborhood. Sue Skelton called 9-1-1 when her car was struck by gunfire in Chadbourn, North Carolina. Skelton left the area after the incident and dialed 9-1-1. The first telecommunicator Skelton spoke with instructed her to return to the area to speak with police. Skelton did not return to the area and instead stopped in nearby Tabor City and called 9-1-1 again. The second dispatcher the couple spoke with told the couple “don’t ever stop there, ever” when she heard they were out of Chadbourn. The dispatcher later went on to tell Skelton to never go through Chadbourn again. Officials from Chadbourn were shocked and offended by the comments that the dispatcher made, saying they have worked hard to change the reputation the town historically had. The unidentified dispatcher recieved a 3 day suspension for her comments to Skelton.
